US raw steel mill capability utilization rose the week ended April 29, the American Iron and Steel Institute said May 1.
Raw steel production was at 76.3%, up from 75.6% the previous week.
Production during the week totaled 1.716 million st, up 0.9% from the week ended April 22, when production was 1.700 million st.
Production decreased 4% from the corresponding week a year ago, when capability utilization was at 81.9% and production totaled 1.788 million st.
Adjusted year-to-date production through April 29 totaled 28.386 million st, with a capability utilization rate of 74.6%. That is down 4.4% from the 29.687 million st produced in the same period a year ago when the utilization rate was 80.3%.
Broken down by AISI district, production totaled 147,000 st in the Northeast; 575,000 st in the Great Lakes region; 220,000 st in the Midwest; 707,000 st in the Southern district; and 67,000 st in the Western region.
